In late November, all of retail slashes its prices — and for about ten days, second-hand loses its number-one argument: being cheaper than new. Many sellers endure Black Friday week; well prepared, it's the opposite — the best clear-out window of the year. The difference comes down to one thing: knowing in advance what you discount, and what you absolutely don't.
First, sort your stock into three piles
- The dormants — online for 3+ months, few favourites: Black Friday exists for them. Every extra week in stock costs them space and visibility, and their value won't climb back.
- The regular movers — what normally sells in 2-6 weeks: no reason to discount it, it will sell at its price. At most, a small token discount.
- Premium and vintage — brands new retail never discounts, rare pieces: zero discount. That week, they're actually your best argument against discounted new — push them forward, don't devalue them.
The discount that triggers (and the one that destroys)
On a €12 item, −10% (€1.20) triggers nothing: the Black Friday buyer is conditioned to visible discounts. Below −20%, the effort is invisible; the effective zone is −20 to −40% on dormants — and only on them. Remember where you start from: an unsold dormant is worth €0 while it sleeps. Selling it at −30% isn't losing 30%, it's recovering 70% of a value that was fading out — and freeing the bin for stock that moves.
Bundles: the weapon of the week
Black Friday is the year's best moment for bundles: the buyer is in volume mode, and a bundle clears five dormants at once for a single shipment. Build them in advance (same size, same universe), with a bundle price clearly below the sum of the pieces — it's the most profitable discount there is, since it also saves four parcels and four trips to the drop-off point.
The week's calendar
D−7: piles sorted, bundles built, purchase prices checked. Monday-Wednesday: discounts set on dormants (buyers are already comparing). Friday-Sunday: the peak — be responsive on offers and questions; that's the weekend when an unanswered message costs a sale. The Monday after: whatever didn't leave at −30% won't leave at −40% either — withdraw, store for a clear-out sale, or donate: the space is worth more than the item.
