The seller's monthly review: 5 numbers, 20 minutes, one decision per number

29 October 2026 · 6 min read

Most sellers watch a single number: what Vinted paid out this month. It's the most visible figure — and the least useful for deciding. A proper monthly review takes 5 numbers and 20 minutes at the end of each month. Here they are — and above all, what each one tells you to do.

1. Revenue… compared to the same month last year

October's revenue doesn't compare to September's: seasonality distorts everything (October coats always crush August t-shirts). The only honest comparison is October against October. Above last year: your machine is growing. Below: find out why before November writes itself the same way.

2. Margin — not revenue

€1,000 of sales at 70% margin beats €1,400 at 45%. The month's margin (sales − purchase prices − overheads) is the number that pays; revenue is only its envelope. If you don't know your monthly margin, no other number in the review means anything — that's the first hole to plug.

3. Average basket

It tells you what you're selling. A basket sliding from €14 to €10 means fast fashion has taken over from your higher-value pieces — often without anyone deciding it, simply because it's easier to source. This is the number that steers next month's buying.

4. Time-to-sale of this month's sold items

How long did the items sold this month wait online? A stretching time-to-sale is the earliest signal of a problem — prices too high, tired photos, off-season stock — visible weeks before revenue drops. It's your smoke alarm.

5. Dormant stock

How many items have passed 3 months online, and for what value? That number commands an action, not a meditation: price drop, bundle, or withdrawal. A dormant ignored in October's review will still be there in January's — having occupied the space of three items that would have sold.

The 20-minute method: same day every month (the 1st, say), the 5 numbers noted side by side with previous months, and one decision per number — not a battle plan, an action. The review that takes two hours won't be repeated in December; the 20-minute one will hold for years.
