"Vinted has no selling fees" is true — and still manages to mislead. Here is what actually lands in your pocket on a UK sale, and what quietly eats into it.
1. The headline: 0% seller fee
Unlike eBay or Depop, Vinted charges sellers nothing to list or sell. If you price an item at £20 and it sells, £20 is credited to your Vinted balance. That is the genuine advantage of the platform, and why margins on Vinted can beat other marketplaces.
2. The buyer pays Buyer Protection — and it shapes your pricing
Your buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee on top of your price (a fixed part plus a percentage — typically adding around 5-8% on mid-priced items). You never see this money, but your buyer does: an item listed at £20 costs them roughly £21.70 plus postage. When buyers compare "total price to me", your real competitive price includes that fee. Price with the buyer's total in mind, especially on low-value items where the fixed part bites hardest.
3. Postage: who pays what
Buyers pay postage at checkout on standard sales. Your choices still matter: enabling more carriers widens your audience, and on bundles the single postage cost is part of what makes buyers spend more per order. Where postage becomes your cost is on returns you accept and on any label you refund as a goodwill gesture — track those, they are real margin leaks.
4. The optional costs: boosts and Wardrobe Spotlight
Item bumps and Wardrobe Spotlight are the only money Vinted will ever take from you — and they are optional. The honest rule: a boost on a £5 item almost never pays for itself; on a £40+ item with real demand it can. Treat boosts as an experiment with a measured result, not a habit. (Vinted invoices these separately — keep them, they are deductible business costs if you trade.)
5. What a sale really looks like
- Listed price: £20.00 → credited to you: £20.00
- Item cost (charity shop): −£4.50
- Share of a £3 boost that week: −£0.60
- Packaging: −£0.30
- Real profit: £14.60 — a 73% margin. Excellent, but only visible if you track item costs.
