From decluttering to reselling: going legit as a UK sole trader

20 August 2026 · 6 min read

At some point the question flips from "do I owe tax?" to "should I make this official?". Going legit as a sole trader is simpler — and more useful — than most sellers expect.

1. What "sole trader" actually means

It is not a company. You are the business: no Companies House filing, no separate legal entity, no accounts to publish. You register for Self Assessment, trade under your own name (or a trading name), and report profits once a year. It is the natural first structure for a reselling business, and most stay there happily for years.

2. What changes when you register

  • You file Self Assessment and pay income tax + National Insurance on profits.
  • Your records need to hold up — sales, costs, stock. (You should have these anyway.)
  • You can claim expenses — stock, packaging, mileage, storage, a share of home costs where justified.

3. What does not change

  • No VAT until £90,000 turnover — a threshold most resellers will never approach.
  • No obligation to become a limited company; that step only pays at profits well beyond a typical side hustle.
  • Vinted-side, personal accounts remain for personal selling; a business seller should use Vinted Pro, which exists in the UK and gives buyers the legal framework they are entitled to when buying from a trader.

4. Three habits that make it painless

Separate money: a dedicated bank account (any free one) for reselling in and out — it turns year-end from archaeology into a bank statement. Cost items as you list: ten seconds per item, or an unsolvable puzzle in January. Review monthly: revenue, profit, dead stock — fifteen minutes that steer everything.

5. When to take the step

Register when the sourced-stock stream is clearly above £1,000 gross a year, or the moment you start thinking in "stock" and "margins". Early registration costs nothing extra and removes the background anxiety — which, ask any seller, is worth more than the paperwork.

Legit is a feature: registered sellers price with confidence, keep cleaner records, and scale without a skeleton in the drawer.
